CHIOS ISLAND

Chios Island is the fifth largest island of Greece. Located in the northeast of the Aegean Sea, the island is also opposite the Karaburun Peninsula. Around the island are the other Greek islands of Samos and Lesbos.

Chios Island is an island that started to gain importance due to its naval power during the Ionian period. It is known to be the most important trade center of Greece. It entered the Hellenistic period with the occupation of Alexander the Great. The island has been ruled by many sovereignties throughout history, such as Ancient Greece, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. The Chios Castle, each tower of which has different architectural features from the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, is located here. The castle has been the center of political and military administration of Chios throughout history. The castle, which was completely under Ottoman rule in 1912, was declared an archaeological site and protected after it was annexed to the Greek state.
